Career Opportunities in Automotive Technology

oday's cars are smarter and more expensive than ever before, requiring technicians to gain training in science, math and computer technology. Each year 30,000 new automotive technicians are needed across the U.S. This demand for qualified service tech personnel is driving up salaries, benefits and long-term career possibilities. Driving the demand are aging technicians and new technology.

Employment Potential
Job opportunities are plentiful in the automotive service industry. They include automotive technician, service adviser, parts specialist, shop foreman, service manager and others.

Instructors assist students in job placement according to their particular interests.

The U.S. Department of Labor indicates that demand for automotive technicians will continue to grow by 25% through the next few years due to the increased number of motor vehicles on the road.

Automotive Technology Center of Excellence

The Career Learning System Automotive Technology Program is a partnership of the Holcomb and Garden City schools and Garden City Community College. This program is designed to give students the skills they need to attain challenging, well-paying jobs in the automotive industry.

Students may enter the program as high school juniors, but adult students are also welcome.

High school students earn both high school and college credit for the program courses.

How do I enter the program?

  • Application form - pick up a Center of Excellence application form from a high school or GCCC counselor.

  • Take the Mechanical Reasoning Aptitude Test and the ACT WorkKeys Reading for Information
    • Assessments are given at the Comprehensive Learning Center in the GCCC Library. Talk to a counselor about setting up an appointment.
  • Interview for a position in the program. If you’re in High School: The CLS coordinator will set up interviews for high school students each spring.
    If you are coming to GCCC as a post secondary student:
    Take the assessments and contact an instructor to set up an interview.
